Influencer marketing glossary

Clear definitions for the terms that come up in every influencer marketing conversation — from attribution windows to earned media value.

Influencer marketing has a vocabulary that mixes advertising, analytics, and creator-economy terms. This glossary defines the terms that matter when choosing and operating an influencer marketing platform.

Terms

  • Influencer marketing platformSoftware that manages the full creator campaign workflow (discovery, briefing, contracting, approval, attribution, and payment) in one place rather than across separate tools.
  • Influencer discovery toolA tool that surfaces and filters creators by audience demographics, topical relevance, engagement, and audience-quality signals, rather than by follower count alone.
  • Brand collaboration platformA platform that manages ongoing relationships between brands and creators (briefs, contracts, deliverables, attribution, and recurring deals) as a roster rather than a series of one-offs.
  • Campaign management softwareSoftware that batch-handles the operational steps of a creator campaign (briefing, contracting, approval, deliverable tracking, and attribution) so a wave of creators can be managed without collapse.
  • Attribution windowThe period after a creator post during which a conversion is credited to that creator. Short windows under-credit creators whose content converts after a research delay.
  • Earned media valueThe value of reach a creator generates beyond their paid audience (reshares, saves, and comments that travel organically). The metric most often missing from influencer reports.
  • Cost per acquisition (CPA)Total creator cost (fee plus seeding plus coordination) divided by attributed conversions. The number that lets you rank creators and decide where to reinvest.
  • Micro-influencerA creator with roughly 10,000 to 100,000 followers (10K to 100K on YouTube), typically outperforming larger creators on engagement rate, conversion, and cost per acquisition.
  • Engagement rateThe percentage of a creator audience that interacts with a post (likes, comments, shares, saves) relative to reach or follower count. A quality signal, not a revenue signal.
  • Influencer marketingA marketing practice in which brands partner with creators to promote products to the creator audience, paying for reach and integration rather than buying ad inventory directly.
  • Creator economyThe ecosystem of independent content creators who earn revenue from their audiences (brand deals, subscriptions, tips, ads) rather than from traditional employment.
  • Brand dealA paid agreement between a brand and a creator to produce promotional content, specifying deliverables, fee, usage rights, exclusivity, deadlines, and disclosure.
  • Influencer contractThe signed agreement that governs a brand deal, covering usage rights, exclusivity, deliverables, fee, deadlines, disclosure, and payment terms.
  • Influencer marketplaceA platform where brands and creators find each other and transact, ranging from open listing boards to full workflow platforms that carry the deal end to end.
  • UGC (User-Generated Content)Content created by customers or creators, not the brand, that the brand can use in marketing, either organically or through a paid rights deal with the creator.
  • Conversion rateThe percentage of a creator audience that takes a desired action (usually a purchase) after seeing the content, measured per creator over the attribution window.
  • Click-through rate (CTR)The percentage of impressions that turn into clicks, measured at the link (or thumbnail) level. A packaging metric that predicts how many people ever see the integration.
  • Return on investment (ROI)The ratio of attributable revenue to total campaign cost, expressed as a percentage. The number that determines whether influencer marketing survives in the next budget.
